The French authorities on Thursday seized three Viagra-maker’s fake goods worth more than $1.5 million, the biggest ever in the global market.
“This is the second time a counterfeit drug has been found to be worth as much as the real thing,” the French health authority said in a statement. “The counterfeit medicines could be dangerous and could also be a red flag.”
A counterfeit version of Pfizer’s Viagra is currently being tested at more than 500 pharmacies in the United States, some of them run by Americans who have been warned against buying their drugs online.
Pfizer is one of the largest buyers of counterfeit Viagra, selling it under the brand name,, as well as Pfizer's products in India and Europe.
In the United States, Pfizer’s products are sold in a number of health centers including CVS stores, Walmart, Walgreens and Rite-Aid.
The French customs agency said it had seized two fake goods at the international mail order location in the United States.
The packages had been sent to the shipment from China, but the shipment had not been opened and the packages had not been checked. A shipment of Viagra had also been left in a plastic bag at the shipment.
The drugs could have been sent to a person who had not been told they could buy the product but had left the bag open, customs said.
